The Shire of Dundas covers over 93,000km² of land extending through to Eucla at the South Australian border.  The main townsite of Norseman is the centre of the Great Western Woodlands and located at the junction of Goldfields Highway and Eyre Highway, marking either the last stop heading east or the first stop heading west from the near border town of Eucla.  Whether you are travelling to or from the Eastern states, or between the Goldfields and Esperance, take some time to discover the beauty of the Shire of Dundas or enjoy a break in your journey.

Nestled at the heart of the Great Western Woodlands, Norseman is either the first or last town you visit on the western end of the Eyre Highway, depending on which way you are travelling.  Established in 1894 through the riches of gold mining, Norseman was named after the horse of prospector Laurie Sinclair who was one of the first to find gold in the area.  Today gold is still a major source of revenue for Norseman, with tourists able to see a bronze statue of ‘Norseman’ in the centre of town.

The Nullarbor Plain

The Nullarbor extends from the town of Norseman through to the Eyre Peninsular in South Australia.  It is a flat, almost treeless area of harsh yet unique earth.  There are seven main stops along this route between Norseman and the border with South Australia – Fraser Range, Balladonia, Caiguna, Cocklebiddy, Madura, Mundrabilla, and finally Eucla, just 11km from the South Australian border.  Each town provides tourists with a unique experience and a rest stop to refresh and rejuvenate before the next stage of your journey.
