The Shire of Laverton spans an area of over 183,000km² stretching from the Northern Goldfields of Western Australia through to the South Australia border and the Great Victorian Desert.

The town of Laverton is the starting point for the Outback Way linking Western Australia and Queensland.  Information on this 2,700km drive can be found at the Great Beyond Visitor Centre, which is also the location of the Explorers Hall of Fame, where the required Aboriginal Land Permits can be obtained to pass through traditional lands along this route.
