Description
The ‘W.S (Bill) Paterson’ bronze bust is situated in the walkway in front of Council Chambers and was designed and created by Esperance based artist Chris Siemer.
Willian Steel (WS) Paterson was prominent in Esperance for farming, local government and sport. He was also a longtime member of Esperance Bay Historical Society.
Mr Paterson was awarded the status of the first Freeman of the Shire in recognition on his extensive involvement in local government in Esperance for over 28 years from 1941 to 1978 during which time he served as Chairman/Shire President for 14 years. Mr Paterson headed a family committed to the community of Esperance with his son, Don Paterson was also a long-standing and respected member of Council and his granddaughter, Beth O’Callaghan served as the Manager Financial Services at the Shire.
The sculpture was privately donated to the Shire of Esperance and is now part of the Shire Art Collection.
Chris Siemer has lived in Esperance since 1956 and has had a lifelong interest in art, graduating with a Diploma in Art and Design in 1991 from the Claremont School of Art in Perth.
In 1992 Chris built a studio where he incorporated a foundry for art castings and his interest in bronze sculpting developed.
