Whale Tail Sculpture

The ‘Whale Tail’ sculpture was installed in 2014 and quickly become an Instagram sensation.

ABC Esperance interviewed Jason at the unveiling “A lot of people are asking us ‘why a whale tail?’ we obviously do get the whales here in the wintertime, the Southern Right whales,” Jason said. “But really the whale shape is just a reflection of the fact that we’re in an area of outstanding natural beauty and the ocean is very important.”

The sculpture has become the centrepiece of the foreshore and is the background for many local events. You will even find outdoor yoga classes utilising this space in the summer months.

This sculpture is one of two collaborative artworks by Esperance-based artists Cindy Poole and Jason Woolridge, selected for the Esperance Waterfront project by the Shire of Esperance under the Percent for Art Scheme.

The ‘Whale Tail’ sculpture represents the Southern Right whales that travel along the Esperance coastline during winter and celebrates the connection Esperance has to the ocean.

The mainframe, constructed of industrial steel by local company Jatek Engineering, represents the local port and the original Tanker Jetty, with the timber sections representing a boat hull.

The three glass panels across the top reflect the evening colours and sunsets, and the blue section down the middle represents the blue of the ocean.

Jason Wooldridge works part-time as a Design and Technology teacher and as an artist, designer and sculptor in his workshop and studio, Esperance Sculpture Works.

Cindy Poole operates Section Glass Gallery, a working studio specialising in kiln-fired glasswork, designer glass jewellery and bespoke and conceptual glass objects and sculptures.

This is site 63 on the Esperance Arts and Culture Trail map.
