Constructed near the town of Niagara by the Railways Department in 1897, it was intended to provide water for locomotives travelling the Kalgoorlie to Menzies route.
The project cost and scale were underestimated, as was the predicted rainfall, and an excellent underground water source was found at nearby Kookynie.
Located approximately 40 minutes from Menzies, the dam now services locals and visitors to the Shire of Menzies as a great picnic, swimming and camping area. Pull on your sneakers to use the walking trails or get the perfect snap from the top of the narrow bridge.
Like all regional areas, the water levels depend on the weather.
Niagra Dam is Site 8 on the Golden Quest Discovery Trail.
