Description

Best known as one of Kalgoorlie-Boulder’s most quirky attractions, a photo at The World’s Tallest Bin is a bucket-list item when visiting.

Located at the top end of Hannan Street across from the Federal Hotel, the self-proclaimed tallest bin stands about 8m high.

Perplexing to visitors and locals alike, the origins of the bin have been forgotten by many.

Local History and Archives Development Officer Tim Moore did some sleuthing to uncover the mystery of the bin.

“The bin was put in in 1980 for the Tidy Towns competition,” he said. “The Keep Kalgoorlie Klean Kommittee decided this bin would be a focal point for the activities that were occurring around town at the time.”

According to reports, the bin was intended to serve as a reminder to the townspeople not to litter.

The rusty length of pipe was erected before local school children were commissioned to paint it. Handles and the title of ‘world’s tallest’ were later added. The Kalgoorlie Town Council works department constructed the bin using pipe from the water supply according to the Kalgoorlie Miner on Wednesday, September 1980.

The Kalgoorlie Miner reported a month earlier that a bid would be made to have the bin entered in the Guinness Book of Records, but sadly, more than 30 years on, the bin has had no mention in the book.  “I had a search of the Guinness Book of Records and there is no mention of our mighty bin,” Mr Moore said.

40 years later, the ‘World’s Tallest Bin’ continues to divide the locals. Some think it is one of our best tourist attractions and others think it should be removed asap!
