Description

Located in the heart of Kalgoorlie’s CBD is St Barbara’s Square. The square features a statue and fountain in memory of Saint Barbara the patron Saint of Miners.

St Barbara, a princess from Nicomedia, the capital of the Roman province of Bithynia  (Asia Minor, now modern-day Turkey) became the patron saint of miners in the year 304 AD when she was cruelly martyred for her Christian Faith and while protecting a community of underground miners who had befriended her by her father, Dioscorus.

St Barbara’s Square features several picnic benches for you to relax or you can choose from a number of surrounding cafes and eateries.

Since 1999, Kalgoorlie-Boulder annually celebrates St Barbara with a three-day festival. The Festival consists of reverend service known as the St Barbara’s Miners Memorial Service and a Parade down the main street.

Each year thousands of people line Hannan Street for the parade. The parade starts with floats from local schools, community organisations and businesses and finishes with KCGM (Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines) driving a Cat 793 down the street. This truck stands at 6 metres tall, eight metres wide and thirteen metres long!

This is certainly a sight to see so if you come, don’t forget your camera!
