The J.L EPIS Memorial Information Bay welcomes you as you drive into Leonora from Kalgoorlie-Boulder.
You’ll also be greeted by an informative scene showing a load of ore in a tipping tray being drawn by a horse. You’ll also see another figure using a sledgehammer to break the ore prior to shovelling it into the Battery (or Stamp Mill).
A Battery is a mechanical equivalent of a mortar and pestle. The ore is crushed and after passing through a sizing screen, it flows over copper plates which have been polished with mercury. The mercy withholds the gold and the amalgamation is then heated to boil off the mercy and leave just the gold bullion.
There are grey and black water disposal facilities and bins provided for your convenience.
This is the starting point for both of the Leonora Loop Trails but if you haven’t already, make sure you pick up the trail brochures from the Information Centre just up the road before you embark on your trail journey.
