‘Don’s Lighthouse’ was originally built by Port employee Andreas Maier and installed in the Don McKenzie Memorial Garden in 2003 to honour well-known fisherman and local identity Don McKenzie.
The small, but lovely Don Mackenzie Waterfront Gardens is a lovely walk showcasing this work, other public art and memorabilia.
Mackenzie arrived in Esperance in 1947 to fish and subsequently developed a tug service and island cruise business which has contributed to the community and continued to grow with his family still at the helm.
The Esperance Port Authority paid for the construction of the garden and the lighthouse, with local community members providing volunteer assistance.
The lighthouse was revamped in 2008 by Andreas Maier with the assistance of local painting contractor Doug Brown.
This is site 68 on the Esperance Arts and Culture Trail map.
