The Endowment Block which includes the Kalgoorlie City Markets building, is a portion of the Hannan Street CBD which consists of single and two-storey buildings which retain their original configuration, parapets and verandah to the most part.
Known to locals as the Markets Arcade, interpretive boards are located just in the entrance of this magnificent building, that tells the story about how the block was given to the council as an endowment from Sir John Forrest for buying out squatters which had set up small shops in the section of town and resisted removal.
Stretching from the Kalgoorlie Town Hall to St Barbara’s Square, the block of buildings forms a masonry ‘wall’ and accompanying verandahs form an almost constant canopy down the street.
This site is included in the Kalgoorlie Boulder Walking Audio Tour. Walk Hannan Street to learn more about Kalgoorlie’s history. What was the first building to have running water? Which building was the first to have ice? What is the oldest building in the street? Headsets can be purchased from the Kalgoorlie Visitors Centre.
